Rooms to Rent in Cabra, Dublin 7
Cabra is a residential inner suburb about 2 km north-west of the city centre, lying mostly between the Royal Canal and the Phoenix Park. Its Irish name, An Chabrach, means the poor land, and it was commonly spelled Cabragh until the early 20th century. Cabra West was one of the large Dublin Corporation housing schemes begun in the late 1930s, and the area is often divided into Cabra East and Cabra West, with the railway line from the Phoenix Park tunnel as a rough boundary.
The Phoenix Park, Ireland's largest urban park and home to Dublin Zoo and Áras an Uachtaráin, the President's residence, runs along Cabra's western edge, and the Royal Canal towpath is good for walking and cycling. Broom Bridge, where Broombridge Road crosses the canal, has a famous place in science: it is where William Rowan Hamilton first wrote down the formula for quaternions on 16 October 1843, an event marked by a plaque on the bridge.
Cabra has both tram and rail. The Luas Green line runs through the area, with stops at Cabra and at Broombridge, where it meets commuter trains on the Maynooth line, and Pelletstown station opened nearby in 2021. Bus routes run along the Navan Road, Cabra Road and the North Circular Road. Cabra suits students at TU Dublin Grangegorman, a short tram ride away, and anyone looking for a room within reach of the city and the Phoenix Park.
