Rooms to Rent in Kilmainham, Dublin 8
Kilmainham is a historic inner suburb south of the River Liffey and west of the city centre, mostly in Dublin 8 with some parts in Dublin 10. A monastery was founded here by the year 606, and the area grew up along the River Camac. Two of Dublin's best known heritage sites are here: Kilmainham Gaol, the former prison where the leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising were held and executed, now a museum run by the Office of Public Works, and the Royal Hospital Kilmainham, a 17th-century home for retired soldiers modelled on Les Invalides in Paris, which now houses the Irish Museum of Modern Art.
The Irish National War Memorial Gardens, designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, are just to the north beside the Liffey at Islandbridge, and the Phoenix Park is across the river. Kilmainham is also a practical choice for healthcare workers and students, as St James's Hospital, a major teaching hospital linked with Trinity College and the site of the national children's hospital, is on its eastern side.
Heuston station, one of Dublin's three main railway stations, is close by for intercity and commuter trains, and the Luas Red line has stops at Heuston, James's and Suir Road, which is the closest stop to Kilmainham Gaol. Rooms here range from shares in older terraced houses to newer apartments, and Kilmainham suits people who want a characterful area within easy reach of the city centre. Dwelles lists rooms in Kilmainham and the surrounding Dublin 8 neighbourhoods.
