Rooms to Rent in Rathgar, Dublin 6

Rathgar is a residential village on Dublin's Southside, about three kilometres south of the city centre, between Rathmines, Harold's Cross, Terenure and Dartry. Its name comes from Ráth Garbh, the rough ringfort. From 1862 it was part of the township of Rathmines and Rathgar before becoming a city suburb in 1930, and much of it lies within an architectural conservation area of red-brick late Georgian and Victorian terraces. James Joyce was born at 41 Brighton Square in 1882.

The village centre, around the junction of Rathgar Road and Highfield Road, has a small supermarket, restaurants and cafés, with Christ Church Rathgar standing at the crossroads. Dodder Park follows the river on the area's southern side, and Bushy Park is nearby in Terenure. The High School and Stratford College are among the local schools, and the Church of Ireland Theological College is also based in Rathgar.

Rathgar has no Luas stop of its own, but the Cowper and Milltown stops on the Green line are the nearest, and buses run through Rathmines into the city centre. It is quieter and more residential than Rathmines next door, which makes it a good fit for professionals, postgraduate students and anyone who wants a calm base within reach of town. Dwelles lists rooms in Rathgar, from shares in period houses to spare rooms in family homes.
